Jason Ormand will give a presentation on Conky – Conky is a free, light-weight system monitor for X, that displays any information on your desktop. Conky is licensed under the GPL and runs on Linux and BSD

Derrick Parkhurst will give a presentation on Munin – Munin is a networked resource monitoring tool that can help analyze resource trends and “what just happened to kill our performance?” problems. It is designed to be very plug and play. A default installation provides a lot of graphs with almost no work.

We’ll again have a Command Line Fu session. This time there will be prizes!

Debian Bootstrapping, Michael Beam and Audacity, Thomas Gasbarro

When it comes to installing new installations of Debian GNU/Linux there is one tool which should not be ignored. Whether you’re dealing with a real system, or a virtualised one, the debootstrap tool is ideal for quickly installing new Debian environments.

Audacity is free, open source software for recording and editing sounds. It is available for Mac OS X, Microsoft Windows, GNU/Linux, and other operating systems.

The next LUGnuts meeting is scheduled for 7pm, Friday July 11th. We’ll be holding the first CommandLineFu Showdown and Linux Jeopardy Challenge. We’ll have prizes to win in each, so come ready to show your skillz. Derrick Parkhurst will give a short presentation on monitoring servers using Monit. Monit is a free open source utility for managing and monitoring, processes, files, directories and filesystems on a UNIX system. Monit conducts automatic maintenance and repair and can execute meaningful causal actions in error situations. As always, we’ll have beer.

Brian Crowell gave a presentation on Fluggo Media Library, a non-linear video processing system built on Python.

Michael Beam gave a presentation on Gobo Linux. GoboLinux is an alternative Linux distribution which redefines the entire filesystem hierarchy.

This month we had a BugSquash for the Pidgin project.
Stack gave a presentation entitled “How we can help the community by creating documentation through Free Libre Open Source Software (FLOSS) Manuals.”

Derrick Parkhurst gave a presentation on getting a webserver up and running from scratch. An interactive walk-through with audience participation will consisted of installing an Ubuntu server on a virtual private server configured with Apache, MySQL, PHP, WordPress, Ruby, Rails, Postfix, and Mailman.

Charles Southerland gave an excellent presentation about PGP encryption, the web of trust, signing parties. We further discussed group resources. Stack is heading to the Texas Linux Fest next month. We decided to host an Open Source BugSquash in May.

We discussed a group project and the Google Fiber Initiative. Jason Ormand gave a great presentation about software and hardware RAID solutions. We then had a discussion on long and short term data backup strategies. Stack then gave a presentation on FSlint.

The next meeting will be on Friday, January 8th at 7pm at the okcCoCo. We’ll start with a MythBuntu InstallFest. Chris Stackpole will help anyone that brings a system through the install and config of MythTV. Derrick Parkhurst will give a presentation on audio and video compression technology and formats, editing and transcoding software as well as where and how to get the best media including podcasts, music and movies. As always, we’ll also open the floor up to anyone interested in making a short presentation on whatever they are working on or finds interesting (to do with Linux).
