May 10th, 2013 Meeting

Posted on May 7th, 2013

We will be meeting at our normal time this month at The 404.

Kyle has volunteered to do a presentation on diff, Charlie will continue his long-running, highly educational project of building Linux from scratch, and, given time, Thomas may show a teaser of a planned June presentation on what he’s been doing to free his Android tablet (unlocking, custom ROMs and, eventually/hopefully, a full-blown Ubuntu Linux dual boot).

So we can have a general head-count, and for insurance purposes to protect The 404, we kindly ask that you register for the event; while highly encouraged and appreciated, if for whatever reason you can’t/don’t register, you’re still welcome to attend. You can find the registration here.

April 12th, 2013 Meeting

We will be meeting at our normal time this month at The 404.

BJ’s previously announced presentation on Denyhosts has been saved for this month and expanded upon, including securing SSH, using SSH as a proxy, and using screen with SSH, all of which are part of a real world use-case / experience he’d like to share. In addition to that, Derrick Bond has offered to do a small presentation on Fortune. Finally, depending on time, preparedness and availability, Charlie has expressed interest in a long-haul, multi-month topic/experiment/workshop of building a Linux OS (I believe with an end goal of creating a full home-spun distro). Please plan to attend and see if I interpreted all of that correctly!

So we can have a general head-count, and for insurance purposes to protect The 404, we kindly ask that you register for the event; while highly encouraged and appreciated, if for whatever reason you can’t/don’t register, you’re still welcome to attend. You can find the registration here.

March 8th, 2013 Meeting

We will be meeting at our normal time this month at The 404.

Micheal Beam is scheduled to present on the ever handy SED tool and the use of regular expressions, and will most likely land a quadcopter on his head. Thomas will discuss FSLint, an amazingly useful de-duplicate file tool that can help you free disk space and better organize your file system. As always, the floor is open to anyone with anything to share or any questions to ask.

UPDATE: B.J. has offered to do a presentation on sending email notifications from denyhosts using stunnel.

We hope to see you all there!

Feb 8th, 2013 Meeting

Posted on February 1st, 2013

We will be meeting at our normal time this month at The 404.

Getting back into the swing of member presentations, this month we’re pleased to announce B.J. and Kyle’s joint presentation on modern Linux gaming with Valve’s new native Steam gaming client. This teir-1 Linux gaming support is a significant milestone and marks what is hopefully a shift away from the traditional Windows dominance of PC gaming; between Valve’s new-found freedom to market their own Linux-based gaming hardware and revelations that some games actually run faster natively in Linux than under Windows, it’ll be interesting to see how the rest of the industry reacts (and how the Linux community responds to DRM encumbered games). Whatever your stance on the issue, this is a good opportunity to see what progress Valve has made with their take on Linux gaming.

If there is time or specific interest this month, Thomas is ready and waiting with a discussion on finding and dealing with duplicate files (it is a little cooler and less tedious than it sounds).

We hope to see you all there!

Jan 11th, 2013 Meeting

We will be meeting at our normal time this month at The 404.

We had great attendance last month, which was incredible considering how many of our usual suspects couldn’t make it due to conflicts in their schedules (December is always a tough time for meetings). A number of promising topics were mentioned for this month, assuming those individuals don’t have scheduling conflicts of their own, it’ll be interesting to see what they’ve come up with. But that’s in addition to Thomas’ presentation “LINUX PROGRESS: Video, where are we now?”. It has been fully 3 years and 3 months since our presentation on the then-emerging VDPAU hardware accelerated video decoding from nVidia, what came of it, where is it now and what else has evolved in that time? Show up for the discussion to find out about all of that and more! And after last month’s obligatory live demo fail, look forward to a revisiting of Netflix streaming on Linux!

Once again, anyone who can help with multi-file AVCHD camcorder video transcoding (into a single mpeg4 file, etc.), please come ready to answer a few questions.

I’d like to mention, last month’s intro to Linux topics really helped a new attendee and put into perspective how useful and more appropriate to a task Linux can be for someone when we take the time to teach the curious. To anyone reading this wanting a place to start learning at any level, OKCLUGNuts will always have people open to helping, it is the spirit of Linux.

So we can have a general head-count, and for insurance purposes to protect The 404, we kindly ask that you register for the event; while highly encouraged and appreciated, if for whatever reason you can’t/don’t register, you’re still welcome to attend. You can find the registration Here.

Dec 14th, 2012 Meeting

Posted on December 8th, 2012

Cheerful holiday greetings!

We will be meeting at our normal time this month at The 404, located at 704 W Sheridan Ave in Downtown Oklahoma City’s historic Film Row.

Thanks go out to Charlie for his great SSH presentation last month, it was fun and informative, so much so that we never got around to pestering for the next month’s volunteers. The floor will be open for anyone that would like to share anything from a fun Linux fact to a full-blown presentation. Thomas, continuing with his intro to Linux initiative, will present on software installation methods and software clean-up best practices (yes, questions and opinions are allowed and welcomed). Additionally, anyone with AVCHD video transcoding experience, please come ready to answer a few questions.

If you’re not busy watching The Hobbit, we hope to see you Friday December 14th at 7pm. So we can have a general head-count, and for insurance purposes to protect the 404, we kindly ask that you register for the event; while highly encouraged and appreciated, if for whatever reason you can’t/don’t register, you’re still welcome to attend. November 9th, 2012 LUGNuts Meeting

Posted on November 6th, 2012

Greetings!

We will be meeting at our normal time this month at The 404, located at 704 W Sheridan Ave on Film Row in Downtown Oklahoma City.

Despite all the confusion with the status of the okcCoCo, we had a reasonable turn out last month with some lively discussion resulting. From that a few new ideas for the LUGNuts came about, which we’ll try out over the next few meetings. First off, our community is varied, we have different things that draw us to Linux and therefore use it in different ways, but when discussing what we do so well, too often differences in technical levels or experience can be overlooked. To address the needs and interests of our members of all skill levels, we plan to provide (in addition to high level talks) some lower level and hands-on presentations and demonstrations. Is there something that you’ve heard about that others do on Linux and would like to know more about, is there something you’re trying to accomplish on Linux but aren’t sure what programs to use or how best to use them, is there something you want to do within Linux to better manage your time and resources or otherwise automate or streamline things you spend too much time and effort on? If so, we may just cover it, and if we overlook it, requests are always welcome. Overall, our hope is that more people can learn HOW to use more of Linux more efficiently and effectively.

With that said, we’re happy to announce that Charlie has graciously volunteered to lead an in-depth, possibly hands-on, introduction to using SSH. If you’ve ever wanted to learn how to control your home computers from work or on the road, graphically, or how to get your web browser to selectively send sensitive (banking, etc.) or otherwise restricted (social networking, etc.) information through an internet connection you trust, or even just how to access your files remotely, this is a presentation you won’t want to miss. Come ready to learn and interact.

I’m honestly excited for this presentation, I hope to see you all there on Friday November 9th at 7pm. Also, so we have a general head-count and for insurance purposes to protect the 404, we kindly ask that you register for the event; while highly encouraged and appreciated, if you can’t/didn’t register, don’t let it stop you, you’re still welcome to attend. You can find the registration here.

Thank you!

October 12th 2012 meeting

Posted on October 10th, 2012

Greetings!

We will be meeting at our normal time this month at the 404.

We do not have a presenter lined up for this month, so we would like to try an experiment. Would you be willing to give a 5 minute showcasing of one Open Source program/utility/script you feel you could not live without? Keep it short and sweet; just tell us the program and why you like it. It should make for a very interesting night of conversation.

For those of you who have contacted me about the news surrounding the OKC CoCo, it is a very sad and unfortunate event. However, the 404 is still going well and thus we will meet at the same location that we have been these past few months.

Also, for insurance purposes to protect the 404 we kindly ask that you register for the event. You can find the registration here.

Thank you!

Need new volunteer to manage OKCLUGNuts

Posted on September 15th, 2012

Greetings all,

I have been helping organize LUGNuts for a while now, and now it is time to turn it over to someone else. I will be moving to a new state for a job opportunity that has opened up to me. OKCLUGNuts needs one of its many members to step up and help organize future meetings and events.

What needs to be done:
* Announce meetings on the webpage, Google+, and the email list.
* Manage the okclugnuts.com server, webpage, and forum.
* Gather speakers and presentations for upcoming meeings.
* Help the Linux user community get plugged into LUGNuts.
* Have a presentation ready just incase there isn’t a speaker or a speaker isn’t able to show.

Overall it is quite simple and I promise you will learn quite a bit and expand your skill set as you research presentations to give.

Thomas has volunteered to step in as an intrim between organizers so if you are interested in this position please contact Thomas or myself (my email can be found over there -> ). We will be happy to get you all the information you need as well as help out however we can.

Thanks everyone. It has been fantiastic hanging out with all of you these past three years and I wish you all the best!

~Stack~
